The Under Cover Story

This project started with a soirée at Reini’s Simonstown home to which he had invited Sarah to guest on two songs- ‘Into the Mystic’ and ‘Wish You Were Here’. The performances were filmed by Gavin Allderman and posted to his YouTube site. Very quickly, there were numerous clicks and comments one of which, from Russia, suggested that we should do a version of Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’.

Reini recorded a scratch track of the song and sent the WAV to Sarah who sent back her Strat parts. And so the ping-pong started – without actually spending any time together in the studio, the recording was finished and an effective modus operandi established. This is still the way we work with contributions from Dominic Adelbert in Berlin and mastering by Kevin Petrie in the UK.

Our recording gear is pedestrian at best, Rode mics via Quadcapture into Audacity for Reini and a combination of a mic’d Vox and amp sims in Studio One for Sarah.
Reini plays Lakewood Guitars (and loves them) – 6 & 12 string, nylon and baritone. He uses a Squire fretless jazz bass, Telecaster and Yamaha DD65 e-drum kit with variety of analog percussion instruments. Sarah plays a Stratocaster and Lakewood acoustic.

All productions are collaborative and quite democratic and we feel that we’re making collective headway! Most important, we love this creative process. It’s great centering in on covers, particularly for Reini who’s been primarily an originals muso. There is much to learn from the works of others, especially those who have been hugely successful with their creations. However, we do intend to add some originals into the mix, starting with ‘Again’. We love, respect and credit the songwriters whose music we’re covering; thank you!
