Riders on the Storm - The Doors
Written by John Densmore, Robby Krieger, Ray Manzarek & Jim Morrison.
This is our tribute to the Doors Riders on the Storm – especially to Ray Manzarek who added a cool jazzy dimension and a deep musicality to the group. His ability as a keyboard bassist is also legendary. Reini was inspired by a YouTube docccie on ‘Riders’ in which Manzarek generously praises the band members for their contributions.
We set out, as with previous projects, to render the song more ‘acoustically’ – the first take, which is still there in the mix, was purely acoustic guitar and vocal, followed by bass, minimal percussion and then Sarah’s Strat fills and solos. Quite soon, we got into deeper water when Dom offered a ‘Rhodes’ part, followed by Sarah’s harmonies and much more percussion. The arrangement was totally organic with almost no planning. Both the scratch track vocals and guitar remained in the recording. There was no click track.
Mixing was a challenge and we’re grateful to Kevin Petrie for his work at the end. All tracks were recorded at our disparate homes, miles apart, connected by the wizardry of IT and huge joy in the collaboration. Gavin, our resident videographer and sound board, was there every step of the way. There is much to be said for delving into songs written by others in this way; hopefully some of their genius rubs off..
